Bradley James NowellĀ (February 22, 1968Ā ā May 25, 1996) was anĀ AmericanĀ musician who served as the founder,Ā lead singer, andguitaristĀ of the ska-punk bandĀ Sublime. He died at the age of 28 from aĀ heroinĀ overdoseĀ shortly before the release of Sublime'sĀ self-titledmajor label debut. Raised inĀ Long Beach, California, Nowell developed an interest in music at a young age. His father took him on a trip to theĀ Virgin Islandsduring childhood, which exposed him toĀ reggaeĀ andĀ dancehallĀ music. Nowell played in various bands until forming the group Sublime with bassistĀ Eric WilsonĀ and drummerĀ Bud Gaugh, whom he had met while attendingĀ California State University, Long Beach. As Sublime gained success, Nowell struggled with a worsening addiction toĀ heroin, eventually dying of a heroin overdose while Sublime was on tour on May 25, 1996.
